UMG Screen FX Material

Title: Senior Technical Game Designer

Role: UI/UX Designer

Company: Disruptive Games

Platform: PC, Xbox, PS5

Engine: Unreal Engine 5

In Wreck Runners there was a need to add more elements to put players in a 1970s frame of mind. I had the thought to use TV screens and have in-world UMG elements appear to have CRT display effects.

To give things a cohesive look, textures and video were imported without any effects applied, then I made a material that would be applied to the entire screen widget. This meant that whatever the designers wanted to put in a widget, it would all have a vintage look.

We needed a screen showing basic instructions for new players and a way to show the results of a round when the player finishes extraction. In a push for more diegetic UI elements, I had the idea of putting it up on an old-school LED jumbotron screen you would see in stadiums in the '80s and '90s. I made a material effect that made a widget in the level look like it's made up of thousands of individual colored light bulbs. It's a work in progress, as the contrast is too high in places, but the effect works well.
